Young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have many needs when in the transition period, and if these needs are not addressed, future employment, social participation, community engagement, independent living, and overall quality of life can be negatively impacted. Occupational therapy practitioners are uniquely qualified to address the needs of transitioning young adults with disabilities in schools and in emerging settings. This presentation will describe the needs of young adults with IDD in the transition period, describe occupational therapy’s growing role in transition planning and additional settings, present intervention ideas, and explore opportunities for advocacy within this area of practice.
