OT and the Niche of Driving Rehabilitation
Christina Duncan, MS, OTR/L, CDRS

Did you know most medical diagnoses can affect a person’s ability to drive? How many times have you met a patient and/or client that has goals of returning to driving? A lot, I can imagine! As one of the most valued and complex IADL’s we perform daily, driving occupies a lot of time during our day and plays a big part in what we consider our independence, with a direct impact on a person’s quality of life.
Our goal as occupational therapy practitioners is to return a client back to functioning in their valued occupations and this includes driving. It is well within our scope of OT and as an OT generalist to address driving, community access and transportation needs. As a driving rehabilitation specialist (DRS) and/or certified driving rehabilitation specialist (CDRS), you would be able to take this process a step further with advanced training to assist clients with returning to driving with or without adaptations as well as transitioning to driving retirement, when driving skills are becoming diminished. As a CDRS, we complete comprehensive evaluations on skills that are needed for vehicle operations on the roadways. This may include vision, strength, coordination, cognition, and reaction time. We follow the comprehensive evaluation with an in-car evaluation of these skills and if needed, training with adaptations that may assist a person to operate a vehicle safely such as transitioning a patient to operation of a vehicle using hand controls only. I always like to say, “my goal for my clients is to keep you driving as long as possible and as long as it is safe to do so.”

If driving rehabilitation or becoming a DRS or CDRS is something you would like to learn more about, you can find more information by visiting The Association for Driving Rehabilitation Specialist (ADED) website at www.aded.net. Here you also have the ability to search for driving professionals so that you can direct clients to the most appropriate local resources. While not every driving professional may be listed, initiating contact with one of those resources may lead to identification of the most appropriate local fit. There are currently multiple DRS and CDRS professionals across the state of Ohio, including, but not limited to the following, in each of the OOTA districts:
